Setting the right tone for the new year
How’s that new year’s resolution going?
Research shows only 8 per cent of people achieve them. So, how can a business set achievable and realistic objectives for the year ahead?
Aim for success
Depending on the industry, and the product or service being offered, business goals can vary from finance to people, process or technology. Let’s focus on compliance goals.
To boost training completion rates, consider implementing a compliance goal. For example, complete 100 per cent of all compliance training modules before year’s end, is a great way to motivate workers to achieve something on time.
Similarly, setting an incentive goal for workers to come up with new compliance processes – such as implementing a new checklist to review a client letter – is a great way to foster a compliance culture and to encourage stakeholder buy-ins. After all, compliance is everyone’s responsibility.
Think about refreshing your training. You could roll it out to coincide with national initiatives like Anti-Bullying Week or WorkSafe Week, to emphasise the importance of complying with legislation, and to raise awareness of the repercussions of non-compliance. Informed workers are motivated workers.
Get behind your team
This year, consider what motivates your team to be compliant. Understanding your workplace culture can assist with improving a poor culture, or to increase an already positive workplace culture. You could implement a business-wide engagement survey, or simply listen to feedback from your team to find out what motivates them come to work. Discovering what drives a person to work for your business and why they are passionate about their role is the holy grail of employment engagement!
Building a compliance culture isn’t just a once-off exercise; it’s ongoing and will keep evolving. If something doesn’t work, don’t just give up. Try something else. What works for one business won’t necessarily work for everyone, but what matters is your efforts to raise awareness and to engage your team.
Here’s to an engaging and exciting 2017 for your organisation!
