Refresher training is a term that has been thrown about for years in the compliance industry. It’s nothing new, but what we mean by this term differs depending on who you ask. To some, it means repeating compliance training annually – which is what lawyers recommend. To others, it’s doing a five-minute ‘refresher’ course in a topic for the year.
The challenge of refresher training
When it comes to compliance training, the reality is that there’s usually pressure from all parties involved – e.g. workers, managers and stakeholders – to make the training shorter. No-one wants to dedicate their time to completing courses, when it could be spent on ‘real work’ (and, by extension, profit). It’s a genuine pressure that HR and L&D departments feel constantly. This is the case for developing speedy, ‘five-minute’ refresher courses.
Unfortunately, it’s not so simple. Short compliance training may be impressive at first, in terms of completion rates, but it can’t always get to the heart of workplace culture or workers’ rights and obligations. Short courses might lack the space to fully explain the implications of everyday behaviour or the appropriate steps to stand up to bullying. A business might find itself accountable to the board because of vicarious liability claims – and its five-minute courses have no chance as a defence. We’ll return to this challenge shortly.
Laying the foundation
At Litmos, we have three foundation suites that cover core compliance topics and are legally endorsed. A foundation course is designed to deliver comprehensive and complete training in a particular topic. We’ve designed three very different suites, not only to adapt to different learning styles, but also to allow the training to be rotated, keeping learner fatigue to a minimum.
Now, we’re taking this a step further with two new refresher suites. This creates more flexibility for you and your workers. You can stick with just the foundation courses or, in alternate years, swap a foundation course for a refresher. The key, however, is that you can refresh without exposing your business to greater risk – e.g. from refresher courses that are slightly too short to explain things thoroughly. That’s why we’ve created Adaptive technology to deliver an approach to refresher training that gets the big tick from award-winning lawyers.
Adapting to the challenge of refresher training
Our Adaptive technology allows each worker to focus on the content they need. They do so by completing an assessment at the start of the refresher course. This assessment identifies knowledge gaps for that specific worker and then tailors the refresher content to complete based on these gaps. The more knowledge they demonstrate, the shorter the compliance training will be. Or, if it needs to be longer, it will be – all our refresher training is tailored to the individual.
Protect your business with refresher training
Despite all the different pressures you face, protecting your business and your workers must be your priority – it’s certainly ours. We don’t want to deliver a solution that ‘may or may not’ cut it in court. That’s why our refresher training is always reviewed by specialist lawyers, who have endorsed our Adaptive approach (when used in conjunction with foundation training).
